The Center of Military History and Lessons Learned – G. S. Rakovski Defense and Staff College will organize October 12-16, 2009 in Sofia, Bulgaria, an International Conference: “National Identity and Cultural Traditions of the European Armies during XIX and XX Centuries”. The Conference is following the Program of Euro-Atlantic Partnership Working Plan 2009.
The Conference is focused on the following topics:
1. Military Organization, Armaments and Training.
2. Military Art and Battle Examples.
3. Civil Society and Armed Forces.
4. Military Symbology and Rituals.

ADMINISTRATIVE NOTES
1. Timeline
The Conference is a two days event scheduled for October 12-16, 2009.
2. Visas
Participants need to determine any possible visa requirements for entry in Bulgaria. After the registration, the organizers will deliver personal invitation letters to any participant, who will need it, in order to facilitate the process of issuing visas.
3. Transportation
There will be provided a bus shuttle from/to the airport by G. S. Rakovski Defense and Staff College. A conference representative will meet all participants at the Sofia Airport. If you want to use this bus shuttle, please indicate in the Registration form, and send your time, date and flight number to the e-mails, given in the Registration form by September 15th, 2009.
If you want to take taxi from the airport, you can turn to the offices, located in the public zone of the Arrival Hall.
4. Accommodation
Accommodation will be arranged at participants’ own expense. The organizers will cover accommodation costs for the duration of the conference of the participants from PfP countries. Upon request, reservations will be made in the 3-star Shipka Military Hotel, which is located within the Centre of Sofia by the Organizing Committee. Participants should specify the type of room they wish to be booked on the Registration Form.
Single Room De Luxe = 35 EU
Double room De Luxe = 60 EU
In case of special dietary, medical or other arrangements during the Conference, it should be indicated in the Registration form.
5. Administration
The Conference will take place in the Conference room of G. S. Rakovski Defence and Staff College, which is located within the Centre of Sofia (Sofia, 82 Hristo i Evlogi Georgievi Blvd.)
6. Participation:
The Conference is open to NATO, EU, PfP nations, and to representatives of all other countries. Participants are encouraged to offer briefings and papers on the above mentioned topics. The duration of the briefings must not exceed 10-15 min. A hard and an electronic version of the presentations for publication should be provided NLT September 25th, 2009.
7. Registration
The participants are kindly requested to send the enclosed Registration form NLT September 15th, 2009 to the Conference’s POC.
8. Working language
Working language of the Conference will be English.
