The beach town of Kavarna, Bulgaria is no longer just a popular resort for tourists. Yesterday the IAAF announced Kavarna will host the World Half Marathon Championships in 2012.
Located on the coast of the Black Sea, Kavarna draws a half a million tourists each year.
The town also hosts the Kavarna International Marathon in May. Even though the event is only two years old, it offers $60,000 in prize money and draws a strong international field. It’s also the official Balkan Marathon Championship and Bulgarian National Championship.
The IAAF has already set the course for the 2012 World Half Marathon Championships, which promises to be flat and fast and consists of four 5k loops and another 1.0975k loop. The course will highlight the beauty of the Kavarna.
The 2010 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships will take place on Saturday, October 16, in Nanning, China. Countries are currently in the process of selecting their teams for the event.
