Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, was shot тoday at a public event, while meeting constituents at a grocery store in Tucson.
A spokesman for the Pima County sheriff says that at least 18 people were shot, with at least 6 fatalities. The Tucson Citizen reports that Rep. Giffords was „shot point blank in the head.“
Giffords was airlifted to a hospital to a hospital after the shooting.
Ms. Giffords, a 40-year-old Democrat in her third term in Congress, was shot point blank by an unidentified gunman who fired indiscriminately into the crowd, NPR and other U.S. media said.
Re-elected in the Nov. 2 election, Giffords focused on immigration reform, military issues, stem cell research and alternative energy while serving in Congress.She is married to to U.S.Mark Kelly, an astronaut who is scheduled to command the Shuttle Endeavor when it launches in April.
