Music and dance bring people together at the 46th Annual Spring Festival of Eastern European Dance and Music.
Each year Chitown citizens come out to usher in the coming of spring to the Windy City with this annual event that brings together aficionados of Balkan as well as Eastern European and Eastern Mediterranean music, culture, dance, and food.
Meet friends and make new ones, while sampling foods, enjoying music, and learning about new cultures in workshops, concerts, and cultural sessions.
This festival is part of the Global Voices spring festival series at the International House at the University of Chicago, one of the sponsors along with the University of Chicago Center for Eastern European and Russian Eurasian Studies. The Ensemble Balkanskre Igre, is also a co-sponsor of the festival. (Check out videos here).
Participate in workshops featuring the folklore of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Slovakia, and Turkey with Atanas Kolarovski, Ventzi Sotirov, James Stoyanoff, Chris Bajmakovich, and others.
Attend concerts by such performers as Ork, Legenda, Angel Dobrev, Konstantin Marinov, Mekam, Muzika4U, and other musicians.
One of the highlights of the festival will be authentic Rrom dance, music, and culture with workshops lead by Rumen Shopov and Sani Rifati.
Many countries are participating in this 46th anniversary festival celebration: Poland, Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Slovakia; countries from all corners of the Balkans.
The dancing, food, culture, and fun takes place on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 8pm; admission is $20 for the general public, $15 FDCC admission, and $10 student admission.
Saturday events begin at 9am and run until 1am and include workshops, a buffet-style dinner, and a live concert.
Workshops wrap up Sunday, March 27, at 5pm, but the party continues with a festive dinner party until 1am to be held at a venue that will be announced at the festival.
