More than a million travelers are expected to pass through Chicago’s airports during the Memorial Day travel period. The Chicago Department of Aviation says it’s ready to welcome 1.1 million passengers during the extended weekend from Thursday through Monday.
Aviation Department officials say Friday will be the busiest day — with nearly 199,000 passengers expected at O’Hare International Airport and 65,000 at Midway International Airport.
Volunteers with United Service Organizations will be at O’Hare over the weekend to provide baked goods and water for military personnel.
Gas prices have dipped in time for the weekend, bringing slight relief to those planning car travel over the holiday. As AP explained:
AAA Mid-Atlantic said Friday that the price drop and a summer-like forecast after a long winter and rainy spring are motivating people to travel. AAA Mid-Atlantic says about 719,400 Marylanders will travel this weekend. That’s a half percent drop from last year.
Nationally, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $3.81 per gallon, 8 cents less than last week, but more than $1 higher than one year ago.
Across Maryland, regular unleaded is averaging $3.83. That’s $1.10 cheaper than a week ago, but more than $1 higher than last year. AAA is seeing the state’s highest prices in the Washington suburbs, with an average of $3.87, and the lowest prices in Salisbury on the Eastern Shore, with an average of $3.68.
Much of the West is digging out from record snowfalls, bringing a wintry feel to the Memorial Day weekend for some. As AP reported:
Ski resorts are bustling with activity. A key highway into Yellowstone is closed because parts of the road have seen more than 25 feet of snow. And campgrounds are feverishly removing snow from campsites to clear the way for visitors.
Welcome to Memorial Day weekend in much of the West.
The traditional kickoff of the summer season will have a decidedly wintry feel in the Rocky Mountains, as well as California’s Sierra Nevada, because of a lingering record snowfall.
Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on Memorial Day.
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, an auto race which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. It runs on the Sunday preceding the Memorial Day holiday. The Coca-Cola 600 stock car race has been held later the same day since 1961. The Memorial Tournament golf event has been held on or close to the Memorial Day weekend since 1976. The National Memorial Day Concert takes place on the west lawn of the United States Capitol the Sunday before Memorial Day. The concert is broadcast on PBS and NPR. Music is performed, and respect is paid to the men and women who died in war.
