Boss’s Day gives employees the chance to recognize those in supervisory positions. What is really means is that you now have a chance to suck up to the boss without looking like the “teacher’s pet”. Popular ways to say “thanks” include cards, a lunch in the boss’s honor, flowers, or gift certificates.
National Boss’s Day began in 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Ill., registered the holiday with the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. She designated October 16 as the special day because it was her father’s birthday, who was also her boss.
Four years later, National Boss Day was backed by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner who officially proclaimed the day in 1962. The idea quickly gained favor across the country and is now even observed in England, Australia and South Africa.
According to a recent survey, bosses and employees agree that since the recession started their bosses are more focused on work and more stressed out.
Some of the popular gifts for the Boss’s Day include flowers, ties, pens, personalized shields and greeting cards.
So what exactly is Boss’s day? if you are the boss it means you are entitled to leave work for the rest of the day. If you’re an employee, you are hoping that your boss takes the rest of the day off so you can surf facebook all day. Also, take up a collection and buy a card or one of those “World’s Greatest Boss” mugs during lunch because you and your fellow coworkers totally forgot it was Boss’s Day.
