World-renown kaval player, Theodosii Spassov, leads his Folk Quintet of exceptional musicians in an unforgetable evening with the magic of Bulgarian folklore.
At home in Bulgaria, Theodosii Spassov is a national figure and musical hero, and was recently honored with the Music Artist of the Year award. He has been the Artistic Director of the world-renowned Filip Kutev National Folk Song & Dance Ensemble. For over 20 years, Theodosii has toured all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Canada and United States. Among his many awards are two highly coveted National Music Artist of the Year Awards (1997 and 2002) and Crystal Lyre (2015). This year the President of Republic of Bulgaria bestowed upon Spassov the highest cultural award in the country, the order St. St. Cyril and Methodius in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Bulgarian culture. In addition, he was named in 2015 “Artist for Peace” by UNESCO for his efforts to enhance a dialogue among people, cultures and communities.
Theodossi Spassov Folk Quintet was created in 2007 to present the beauty and cultural uniqueness of Bulgarian folklore around the world. The members of the band include the outstanding Bulgarian musicians – Peyo Peev (gadulka), Ivan Georgiev (gaida), Hristiyan Tsvyatkov (guitar), Genadi Rashkov (tupan). All of them perform on traditional Balkan folk instruments and have long-term connections to the internationally renowned Filip Koutev National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble and the women‟s choir The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices (Le mystère des voix bulgares). Concerts by this ensemble include both traditional and more contemporary, original and innovative renditions of Bulgarian folk music.
