Bulgaria has been identified as a free country in the Freedom in the World 2024 report, Freedom House’s annual study of political rights and civil liberties worldwide. The country has a score of 78 out of 100.
The maximum number of points each country can receive is 100, with a maximum of 60 points based on the level of civil rights and a maximum of 40 points based on political rights. On these indicators, Bulgaria receives 46 and 32 points respectively. The report notes a drop of one point compared to 2023, when the country received a total of 79 points.
Among the neighboring countries, Greece and Romania outperform Bulgaria, scoring 85 and 83 points respectively. Serbia, North Macedonia with their 57 and 67 points are defined by Freedom House as partially free, while Turkiye is defined as not free with 33 points.
In the European Union, Hungary comes last with 65 points – 24 for political rights and 41 for civil liberties. Poland scores 80 points.
Russia is designated „not free“ with a score of 13 out of 100 (4 points for political rights and 9 for civil liberties).
Ukraine scores 49 points and is described as „partly free“ – 21 of the points come from political rights and 28 from civil liberties.
The section on Bulgaria in the full Freedom in the World 2024 report has not yet been published by Freedom House, but the organisation says this will happen as soon as the document becomes available.
