This is part of Todor Zhivkov’s speech to the leadership of the Bulgarian Communist Party just months before the fall of the Berlin Wall and Zhivkov’s removal from power.
Realizing the inevitable collapse of the socialist system, he tries to maintain his seat by changing his ideals completely.
„We will not get anywhere. If we keep going in this direction, we will make a big mistake. The representatives of the Communist party and I now understand that we have made a terrible society. With one sentence socialism is still-born and lifeless. That’s the truth. “
~ Todor Zhivkov
Even though Todor Zhivkov ruled Bulgaria with fear and blood drive for 35 years, there was a monument made in his honor in his hometown.
At the unveiling of the monument, the current President of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Evgenia Zhivkova (granddaughter of Zhivkov), Cherveniakov and other current and former members of the Communist Party were all in attendance.
Zhivkov’s physical and ideological heirs are already preparing a great celebration for the 100th anniversary of his birthday on September 7, 2011.
