Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is trying to expand Chicago’s handgun registration throughout the rest of the state.
Yes, that’s right, Chicago’s mayor has decided he can set policy for the entire state now.
If Rahm has his way, he will force all gun owners to pay a $65 registration fee every five years for every handgun they own, and submit their name, address and phone number, as well as the gun’s make, model, serial number and location and date of purchase to the state police.
Rahm claims that statewide registration is necessary so that Chicago police can find out where guns came from when they are used to commit crimes.
Does he really believe this is going to make any dent in Chicago’s horrible homicide rate? Does the mayor really think the criminals are going to register their guns, or purchase them through legal channels?
What Rahm’s registration will do is lay the groundwork for gun confiscation further down the road.
If Mayor Emanuel actually cared about the safety of law abiding citizens, he would SUPPORT their gun rights and actively lobby for concealed carry (like the other 49 states have).
Call your state representative and senator today and demand that they oppose ANY attempt to implement a statewide handgun registration system. Tell them in no uncertain terms that you expect them to EXPAND our second amendment rights in Illinois, not FURTHER ERODE them.
You can find your state representative and senator by clicking here.
We don’t yet know exactly when or by whom this legislation will be introduced, although the mayor has announced that Republican State Rep. Rosemary Mulligan from Park Ridge will be one of the bill’s cosponsors in the House! Make no mistake, trampling on second amendment rights is a bipartisan activity in our state.
This legislation is expected to be introduced in the coming weeks. Let’s make it a non-starter – call your state legislators today and kill this beast before it is born!
By the way, the Chicago mayor’s office can be reached at 312-744-5000, in case you’d like to let Rahm know that you don’t appreciate his attempt to ram Chicago-style gun registration throughout the state. After all, if he wants to set policy for the whole state, he’d better expect to hear BACK from the whole state!
But first and most importantly, make sure you call your state legislators.
As always, when speaking with elected officials, please be straightforward but courteous.

P.S. Call your state legislators today and demand that they rebuff Mayor Emanuel’s attempt to register gun-owners in Illinois!
