A total of 900 people lost their lives in car crashes in Bulgaria in 2009, which is 161 fewer than the fatalities in 2008.According to Commissar, Aleksi Stratiev from the Traffic Police Directorate, this is the first time Bulgaria has seen a drop in road accident fatalities since 1968, over a 40-year period.
Stratiev has thanked the Bulgarian media for helping raise awareness about road safety which has emerged as a major issue in Bulgaria over the recent years.
